How Doubt Makes Us Question Our Calling

If there is one thing I can be 100% sure of it’s that good things are on the way to me. Time and time again I have seen how even in the most challenging and strange circumstances things have always worked out in my favor.

One thing that I grew up hearing a lot was that “favor isn’t fair”. I can’t say that I had everything growing up and I definitely didn’t have a silver spoon in my mouth, but I was always blessed. My family always had enough. When things got tricky we always found a way through and somehow we became a stronger, more loving family every time.

I say all that to say that I have first hand account – a front row seat to see how everything has always worked out for me (and continues to do so)… So why do I still find myself doubting? Why do I find myself questioning my calling or questioning whether or not I’m on the right track?

Doubt can come in when we feel insecure. It can sneak up when we’re not trusting our path or our calling. Doubt can keep you from truly stepping out on faith and seeing what could be. It tends to be our first mind to question any given situation instead of wondering what could go right.

We can be riding high emotionally and mentally, believing we’re going in the right direction with our purpose and dreams. Then suddenly, overthinking, too much self-questioning leads to doubt. Those big dreams and goals seem far away. The life we want to live most feels like less of a certainty and much more of a question mark.

It’s absolutely crazy how much doubt can pervade our lives and lead us to question the people, dreams and purpose we believe in.

The Buried Life

I recently went on an amazing work trip and I honestly feel like I needed it for multiple reasons. Of course there was plenty of networking and exploration. I also have to mention how much fun it was being in Boca Raton and not having to worry about paying for anything. There were workshops and seminars that also took place. One that stood out to me the most was a keynote done by Ben Nemtin, of The Buried Life. When I tell you that I honestly needed to hear this!… It felt like he was speaking directly to me and directly to that part of myself that continues to doubt.

His story basically started with a bucket list that he and his friends made. They knew they have a dream of making a film and so they decided to create a show that would not only allow them to fulfill their dreams, but also other people’s dreams. For item they knocked off the bucket list they would help someone fulfill a dream. The guiding question in all of this was “what do you want to do before you die?” The whole thing was so inspiring and it obviously made me think a lot.

One point that stuck with me is how we never know how much of an impact we make with every good deed and gesture. Every action creates a ripple effect that causes other people to want to change. Every action helps bring us closer to where it is we are ultimately meant to be. Hearing that made me think about all of the things that led up to being there in that moment. I thought about all of the steps I had to take, all the experiences I had to gain and how much work went into me becoming who I am today.

Everything works out the way it’s supposed to.

There’s no room for doubt when you fully realize that you are always on the right path. Everything is leading up to something new and different. It’s up to you to take a risk and to dare to go after your dreams and your goals. We all need a little motivation every now and then and even in a keynote like this you can inspiration to keep daring to dream, and to not let doubt cause you to question your calling.
