Learning to Control My Schedule and Finding Balance as an Engineer and Dancer

All Posts, Lifestyle, Personal Development, Wellness

March was easily the busiest time I’ve been in for a while. Not only did I have TWO back to back work trips, I also had TWO back to back dance performances!

Thankfully, everything worked out. I was stretched and challenged in more ways than one. Dance is always something I wanted to maintain in my life, but I never would have thought it would pan out like this. I am now on a heels dance company and having a great time.

The main reason I am able to do this is because I have been able to carve out that space and pursue a work life balance that works for me. PTO, evenings, and weekends give me some flexibility, but overall what is a challenge is trying to keep my schedule on track.

Pursuing a Work-Life Balance

I can’t stress how EASY it is to overbook and overcommit! As a full-time STEM professional I know very well I can’t do everything. There are opportunities I have to say no to and interests that have to be postponed. Here is a short clip from my most recent YouTube video on managing my schedule:

It sucks, but sometimes I have to say no to myself and other people at times especially when it seems like things are going out of control.

Here are some more tips on how I try to maintain a work-life balance:

  • Use your PTO wisely. You have flexibility, but make sure you are using it when absolutely necessary and appropriate.
  • You are allowed to say NO. Opportunities that are for you ultimately won’t miss you. Don’t feel bad about trying to maintain your sanity.
  • Understand where you have to draw the line on certain interests, passions, and hobbies. No one can be in two places at once.
  • Take a real look at your schedule. Find when you actually have the most free time and remember that not everyone’s free time looks the same.
  • Lastly, don’t be afraid of authentically going for what you want. You aren’t defined by what you do full time or what you do for other people.

If you didn’t know, I started my second YouTube channel. Check out my first video on how I try to balance being an engineer l, dancer, and everything in between.
