The Need for Community on Social Media

Now more than ever people want to feel connected. Whether it’s feeling connected to a greater purpose, connected to likeminded individuals or just feeling connected to self. There’s a growing need to find space and community.

As a content creator I know one thing that I have been wanting to work on is growing my own community. I’ve been in plenty of communities where I’ve felt like I was giving more than I was receiving. The hardest part about moving on from a community isn’t necessarily leaving. Personally, I think the hardest part is learning that the thing you hoped would work for you isn’t actually working anymore.

It’s a really specific type of grief where you end up grieving what could have been and grieving the fact that you still haven’t found what you’re looking for. Community can mean different things to different people and what works for some may not work for all.

What really matters when we’re finding and creating community?

When it comes to creating and sharing with others what matters more to me is finding the right ears and the right eyes. Think about your own social media accounts for a second. What good is having 50, 500, or even 5,000 followers if they’re all just bots and spam pages? I think at this point we all know a thing or two about “monitoring spirits” on social media.

What matters more is finding genuine people.

What matters more is not building numbers, but building relationships.

Community isn’t something we should rush and social media can make it seem like a mad dash. Community is something we should all be able to experience regardless of how we find it, how big it is, or how many people see it.

How do you prioritize and find community in your own life?
